MISAMARUはブランド創設以来「年齢・性別・国籍・肌の色・個性等に関係なく、自由に和装を楽しんでほしい」という想いのもと、商品作りを続けています。

その中で誕生した商品の一つが「半着物」です。

半着物は、着物をもっと気軽に楽しめるようにという想いから開発しました。
丈を短くすることで着付けの負担を軽減し、洋服や袴などさまざまなアイテムとも組み合わせやすく、現代のファッションとしての着物を楽しめる一着となっています。

現在、MISAMARUでは「メンズ」「レディース」「男女兼用」の3つの仕様を展開しています。

このページでは、その中でも新たに開発した「男女兼用」仕様についてご紹介します。

男女兼用仕様を開発したきっかけ
2025年春から半着物を販売開始し約1年間、私たちは様々なお客様の声をいただいてまいりました。

「性別に関係なく、自分らしい着こなしを楽しみたい」

「高身長でもメンズではなくレディースの着こなしをしたい」

「男性でも帯や袴スカートを胸下で合わせるコーディネートをしてみたい」

こうしたご相談やお声に触れるたび、私たちは一つの問いを持つようになりました。

「性別ではなく『どのように着こなしたいか』を基準に和装を設計することはできないか」

この問いから「男女兼用 半着物」の開発が始まりました。

「袖付」に着目

伝統的な着物ではメンズとレディースで寸法や仕様が異なります。

その中でも私たちが着目したのが「袖付（そでつけ）」です。

※袖付とは、身頃と袖の接続部分を指します。

伝統的なレディース着物は袖付が短く、胸下からウエスト位置で帯や袴スカートを合わせる着こなしにも適しています。
一方、メンズ着物は袖付が長く、腰位置での着用を前提とした構造になっています。

一見すると小さな違いですが、この構造は袖の動き方だけでなく、着用位置や着こなしにも大きく関わります。

男女兼用 半着物の設計

MISAMARUの半着物は、全ての仕様で伝統的な男着物の良さを取り入れ、振り（袖の下部）を閉じた構造を採用しています。

これにより、着用時に二の腕が見えにくく、袖にスマートフォンや鍵などの小物を入れやすく落ちにくい実用性も備えています。

その上で、男女兼用仕様では、従来は性別によって決められていた袖付構造を見直しました。

私たちが基準にしたのは「男性か女性か」ではなく「どのように着こなしたいか」ということです。

そのため、男女兼用 半着物は全サイズ、伝統的なレディース着物と同じ、またはそれに近い袖付構造を採用しています。

この設計により、高身長の女性でもレディース仕様と同じ、またはそれに近い着こなしを楽しみやすくなり、胸下からウエスト位置で帯や袴スカートを合わせるコーディネートにも対応しやすくなりました。

男性も胸下〜ウエスト位置で帯や袴スカートを取り入れた新しい着こなしを楽しむことができます。

また、シンプルなサイズ展開のため、自分に合ったサイズを選びやすくなりました。

性別や身長関係なく、自分が思い描く着こなしを基準に和装スタイルを組むことを可能に。

About MISAMARU's Half-Kimono

Making Kimono More Accessible and More Versatile

At MISAMARU, our goal is to create a world where people of all ages, genders, nationalities, and personal styles can enjoy Japanese clothing more freely.

One of the products born from that vision is the Half-Kimono.

We developed the Half-Kimono to make wearing kimono easier and more approachable for everyday life.

Its shorter length makes dressing much simpler than a traditional full-length kimono while also making it easy to pair with both Japanese and Western clothing. We designed it as a versatile garment that fits naturally into modern lifestyles.

Today, the Half-Kimono is available in three versions: Men's, Women's, and Gender-Inclusive.

On this page, we'd like to introduce the ideas behind our newest design: the Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono.

Why We Created the Gender-Inclusive Version

After launching the Half-Kimono, we received many comments and requests from customers around the world.

Some wanted the freedom to dress without being limited by traditional gender categories.

Some taller women wanted to wear larger sizes without having to switch to a men's cut.

Some men wanted to wear their obi (kimono belt) higher on the body or style the garment with a hakama skirt—looks that are difficult to achieve with conventional men's kimono.

These conversations led us to ask ourselves one simple question:

"What if kimono were designed based on how someone wants to wear them, rather than whether they're a man or a woman?"

That question became the starting point for the Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono.

Focusing on One Important Detail: The Sleeve Attachment

Traditional men's and women's kimono differ in several ways.

One of the most important differences is the sleeve attachment—the section where the sleeve is sewn to the body of the kimono.

On traditional women's kimono, this attachment is shorter.

On traditional men's kimono, it is longer.

Although this may seem like a small construction detail, it has a significant impact on how the garment hangs, how high the obi can be tied, and what kinds of styling are possible.

How We Designed the Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono

All MISAMARU Half-Kimonos share several design features inspired by traditional men's kimono.

The lower part of the sleeves is sewn closed, helping keep the upper arms covered while also allowing the sleeves to function as practical pockets for carrying small items such as a smartphone or wallet.

For the Gender-Inclusive version, however, we reconsidered one specific feature: the sleeve attachment.

Instead of designing it according to gender, we designed it according to how the garment is intended to be worn.

For that reason, every size of the Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono uses a sleeve attachment similar to that of a traditional women's kimono.

This design makes it possible to:

・Allow taller women to choose larger sizes without switching to a men's pattern, making it easier to enjoy styling traditionally associated with women's kimono.

・Wear an obi higher on the torso or pair the garment with a hakama skirt more comfortably.

・Give men greater freedom to explore modern kimono styling, including higher obi placement and hakama skirt coordination.

・Let customers choose their size based on their preferred styling rather than gender alone.

The Idea Behind This Design

The Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono is not intended to replace traditional men's or women's kimono.

Nor is it meant to eliminate gender-specific designs.

We believe that each style has its own strengths and its own place.

Our goal was simply to introduce another option—one that allows people to choose a garment based on how they want to wear it, rather than which gender category it belongs to.

Instead of limiting styling choices because of gender or body type, we wanted to give people the freedom to choose the look that feels right for them.

That is the idea behind the Gender-Inclusive Half-Kimono.
